The Japanese Navy underground headquarters in Okinawa was built in 1944 to shelter 4000 soldiers and sailors under the command of RADM Minoru Ota. They were opposed during the battle of Okinawa by the US Sixth Marine Division, commanded by MG Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr., whose forces originally landed at what is now Torii Station. On June 13, 1945, Admiral Ota and several of his staff committed suicide in the headquarters. Over 2400 human remains were recovered from the underground headquarters.
