The invasion of Okinawa's main island began at sunrise on Easter Sunday, 1 April 1945. After the largest air and naval artillery bombardment in military history, soldiers and marines were amazed to find their landings were unopposed. General Ushijima had withdrawn his main force to fortified ridgelines north of Shuri Castle. 65,000 Americans were ashore by nightfall. One soldier commented, "I've already lived longer than I thought I would."
