The Himeyuri Museum near Itoman is a memorial to the students of a womens' high school. When the battle of Okinawa began 222 students, ages 15-18, and 18 teachers were inducted into units of the Okinawa Army Field Hospital, to care for the wounded and to bury the dead. A series of retreats and forced marches led them to the hospital's final location in caves south of Itoman, where 226 of the original 240 students and teachers died.
